WAY TO GLO!

Vitamin C, the immunity boosting organic compound without which sailors died of scurvy.

To your skin, it is actually a powerful antioxidant. It has gained immense popularity in the skincare industry, and for good reason. Its ability to address a multitude of skin concerns makes it a true superhero of the beauty realm. From boosting collagen production to combating free radicals, Vitamin C brings an array of benefits that can help you achieve a glowing complexion.

Collagen Production:

One of the primary reasons why Vitamin C is highly coveted in skincare is its remarkable ability to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and elasticity to our skin. As we age, collagen production naturally declines, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. By incorporating Vitamin C into your skincare routine, you can significantly boost collagen synthesis, resulting in firmer, plumper, and more youthful-looking skin.

Powerful Antioxidant Protection:

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that shields the skin from the damaging effects of free radicals, which are unstable molecules generated by factors such as pollution, UV radiation, and stress. These free radicals wreak havoc on our skin, causing premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and dullness. By neutralizing these harmful molecules, Vitamin C helps prevent and reverse the signs of photoaging, leaving you with a vibrant and rejuvenated complexion.

Brightening and Evening Out Skin Tone:

Vitamin C possesses skin-brightening properties that can fade dark spots, sunspots, and hyperpigmentation. By inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for these discolorations, Vitamin C helps to restore your skin's natural radiance and promote a more uniform complexion.

Protection against Sun Damage:

While Vitamin C cannot replace sunscreen, it works in tandem with sun protection to bolster your skin's defense against harmful UV rays. When applied topically, Vitamin C acts as a second line of defense, helping to reduce the damage caused by sun exposure, such as sunburn, fine lines, and discoloration. Incorporating Vitamin C into your morning routine, followed by a broad-spectrum sunscreen, provides a robust shield against the sun's harmful effects.

Choosing the Right Vitamin C Product:

When selecting a Vitamin C product, it is crucial to consider its stability, potency, and formulation. Look for serums or creams that contain a stable form of Vitamin C, such as L-ascorbic acid or ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, as these variants are more effective. Additionally, opt for products with a concentration of 10-20% Vitamin C for optimal results.

It is also worth noting that given the above-mentioned benefits from Vitamin C, the effect from this ingredient is best optimized when incorporated into your morning routine.

Finally, if you don’t want to do your own homework and prefers a recommendation. This is the Vitamin C serum I like and currently use in my morning routine.

GLO ABOVE & BEYOND

Supergoop, a company specializing in user-friendly SPF products, is working towards expanding its market globally. The brand aims to offer sunscreen products that blend seamlessly with makeup, body care, and skincare products, avoiding stickiness and messiness. In 2022, Supergoop achieved $250 million in sales, experiencing a 65 percent year-on-year increase. Now, the company plans to expand its presence in the U.K., Europe, and the Middle East through partnerships with stockists Space NK and Sephora.

Supergoop faces various regulatory hurdles as sunscreen regulations differ across different regions. The complexity of expanding globally requires expertise and infrastructure in areas such as packaging and formula registration. The brand has already entered the U.K. market in 2020 and launched in Sephora stores across Europe in March of the current year. Supergoop's success can be attributed to its unique formulas, which address common consumer concerns such as white cast, unpleasant smell, and stickiness.

Amanda Baldwin, the CEO of Supergoop, emphasizes the importance of the European Union's ingredient standards as a reference for making ingredient choices. The brand's marketing strategy includes pop-up events, media campaigns, and exclusive dinners to engage consumers effectively. While Supergoop is focusing on digital and international expansion, the possibility of brick-and-mortar stores is not ruled out for the future.

The Asian market is well-educated about the importance of wearing sunscreen, while in Europe, the desire to get a tan is still prevalent. Baldwin highlights a significant shift in the attitude towards sunscreen in the United States over the past seven years. She emphasizes that sunscreen is essential not only on sunny days but also during cold and rainy weather, as UVA damage occurs regardless of the weather conditions. Supergoop's underlying mission is to raise awareness about the risks of skin cancer, which is caused by sun exposure and contributes to 90 percent of signs of aging.
