WAY TO GLO!

Ikaria, Greece. Okinawa, Japan. The Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. The Ogliastra region of Sardinia. Loma Linda, California. What could these diverse locales possibly have in common?

Well, they are renowned as Earth's "Blue Zones," remarkable regions where an extraordinary number of individuals reach the age of 100 and beyond. In a captivating Netflix documentary, acclaimed author and researcher Dan Buettner whisks you away to these far-flung places, delving into the mysteries behind why the Grim Reaper seems to make infrequent appearances.

While each Blue Zone boasts its own unique charm, they all share some common traits that can serve as invaluable lessons for anyone aspiring to lead a long, vibrant life: wise dietary choices, incorporating gentle daily exercises (Zone 2 for the win), fostering robust community bonds, and, quite literally, having a compelling reason to wake up every morning.

What Is The Blue Zone Diet?

The secret sauce to the longevity of residents of the Blue Zone? You guessed it – a diet rich in nourishing, unprocessed, whole foods.

Let's get into the directives of the Blue Zone Diet.

Proportions: In the Blue Zone universe, people eat diets that are about 65 percent carbs, 20 percent fats, and 15 percent proteins. They also choose plant-based foods about 95 percent of the time, and animal-based food about 5% of the time. Portion size is also important. People in the Blue Zone pay attention to their portions and eat until they are 80 percent full.

Proteins: Beans and legumes (black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, fava beans, lentils, peas, and peanuts) are like the loyal sidekicks of the Blue Zone Diet. They're your trusty sources of protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, all while being low in saturated fats. Animal-based protein like beef, pork, poultry, farmed fish, or processed meats are enjoyed rarely or never.

Fats That Love Your Skin: Blue Zoners are all about the right kind of fats. Think olive oil and nuts – your skin's best friends. These healthy fats offer essential fatty acids that help maintain your skin's elasticity and moisture, keeping you looking vibrant and youthful.

Dairy: Products like goat’s milk, feta cheese, pecorino cheese are popular in the Blue Zone diet. However, milk, cream, butter, or cheese made from cow’s milk should be very limited.

Whole Grains: Choose 100 percent whole grains, such as barley, brown rice, bulgur wheat, whole cornmeal, farro, oatmeal, and quinoa (avoid pearled barley and pearled farro).

Fruits & Vegetables: No one will ever tell you to eat less of these — especially the Blue Zone people. Leafy greens like spinach, kale, beet and turnip greens, chard, and collards are tops. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, sea greens, and sea vegetables such as seaweed and kelp, and mushrooms are also good choices. There are no limits on fresh, whole fruits and vegetables. However, fruit juice should be strictly limited.

Bidding Farewell to Processed Foods and Sugars: Processed foods and added sugars are the villains in this story. Blue Zoners keep them at bay, understanding how excess sugar and processed munchies can fast-track aging and give you a tired, dull complexion.

Why Blue Zone Is the Fountain of Youth

Antioxidant Oasis: The Blue Zone Diet is like an antioxidant treasure hunt. With berries, leafy greens, and nuts galore, it's a feast for your skin. Antioxidants help battle those pesky free radicals that can age you prematurely.

Inflammation Buster: Chronic inflammation is the ultimate nemesis of youthful skin. The Blue Zone way of life, with its wholesome, unprocessed foods, can help put out the inflammation fire, leading to healthier, more youthful skin.

Balanced Nutrients: The Blue Zone Diet serves up a balanced buffet of vitamins (like A, C, and E), minerals (zinc and selenium), and healthy fats – all essential for your skin's renewal and upkeep.

Stay Hydrated: Many Blue Zone foods, like fruits and veggies, have high water content. Proper hydration is your secret weapon for plump, radiant skin.

Gut Health Matters: Don't forget the gut! Fiber-rich foods and probiotics in some Blue Zone communities support a thriving gut microbiome. A happy gut means a happier you, and it can work wonders for your skin's health too.

The Blue Zone Lifestyle isn't just about what you eat – it's a holistic approach to nourishing your body and soul. Along with the dietary delights, remember to savor meals with loved ones and practice mindful eating. These lifestyle aspects, combined with the Blue Zone Diet principles, will guide you on a transformative journey to a more youthful appearance, radiant skin, and a life filled with boundless energy. So, what are you waiting for? It's time to embrace the Blue Zone Lifestyle and unlock the secrets to timeless beauty and well-being.
